Generator Oil Change Tips & Tricks
7th Jun 2023
Regular maintenance is key for a reliable, long-lasting generator.
At the top of your generator maintenance list should be an oil change. A new oil change lubricates vital parts of the generator engine, making it easier to start up when you need it.
Here’s a quick guide on how to change the oil in your generator to keep it running smoothly and efficiently.
How To Change The Oil In Your Generator (7 Simple Steps)
1. Gather Your Equipment
To change your generator’s oil, you’ll need:
- Replacement oil – refer to the owners manual for the right type for your generator.
- Clean rag
- Philips head screwdriver
- Paint tray or oil pan
- New oil filter
- Oil funnel
- Wrench
2. Warm Up The Old Oil
Turn your generator on for 5 minutes to warm up the old oil inside – this makes it easier to drain. After 5 minutes, turn the generator off.
3. Unplug The Spark Wire (Optional)
Tip: Unplugging the spark wire prevents the generator accidentally starting while you’re refilling the oil.
Identify the spark plug using the owners manual - in most modern generators, it should be behind the side panel.
Remove the side panel, then remove the wire connected to the spark plug. To do so, grab the spark wire boot firmly and twist it in either direction, pulling it off at the same time. Never pull the wire directly as you may easily damage it.
4. Drain The Oil
Remove the oil filler cap either by hand or with a wrench. Then, place a paint tray under the generator’s oil port and tilt the generator so the oil drains into it.
Let the oil drain completely for a few minutes. Then, wipe down any excess or spilt oil before screwing the oil filler cap back in.
Tip: If your generators’ oil plug is under the engine, place it on top of two identical blocks. This will create some free space under the oil plug for the oil tray.
5. Change The Oil Filter
Tip: Replacing the oil filter at the same time as the oil helps prolong the life of your generator.
The remove the oil filter, gently loosen it with a wrench before unscrewing it manually. Then, add some lube to the new filter and screw it in by hand. Just be sure not to overtighten the filter and damage it.
6. Add The New Oil
Remove the oil filler cap and slowly pour the new oil into your generator using a funnel. Refill the oil to the fill level indicated in the owner's manual.
Then tighten the oil filler cap securely and wipe down any oil spills on your generator with a clean rag.
7. Reconnect The Spark Plug Wire
If you unplugged your generator’s spark plug, you’ll need to reconnect it.
To do so, grab the boot of the wire and slide it over the top of the plug. Then press it all the way in where you should feel, or even hear a click from the connector.
Replace the generators’ cover and you’re good to go!
How Often Should You Change Generator Oil?
This will depend on the generator model and how often you use it. Check your generator’s owner manual – this should cover the desired oil type, the amount and how often you should replace it.
